Four persons are in police custody after a Mabaruma, Region One man died while receiving treatment for his injuries at the Mabaruma hospital.

The man who died is Aaron Conyers of White Water. Ashley Conyers, his sister, who lived with him, told Stabroek News that on Monday morning her brother went up the road not far from their house and she was awaiting his return.  As she stood on the steps of their home waiting for her brother, she heard sounds of wood hitting against something.

She immediately checked the area the sounds were coming from and saw a shop owner and his mother lift her brother from their shop situated at Black Water Landing, and place him outside. Upon seeing this, she ran to her brother’s rescue and saw that he had already been beaten. Ashley recalled that the shop owner was making aggressive remarks toward her brother while he was crying out in pain. The shop owner’s mother tried to calm her son down since he was giving the sister the impression that he beat up her drunken brother.

Ashley related that her sister-in-law who was around at the time helped her carry Aaron home. On arrival, her brother was left to rest since the family assumed that he would get better by the next day. On Tuesday, the matter was reported to the police and Aaron was taken to the Mabaruma hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

Commander of Regional Police Division # 1, Senior Superintendent Himnauth Sawh, told this newspaper yesterday that at this stage, the facts are unclear as to what happened to Conyers that day and that a post-mortem examination will be done today to determine the cause of death. He explained that four persons are in custody so far, in relation to the investigation.

According to Sawh, Conyers was allegedly assaulted, went home, rested and then went to the hospital after which he was treated and then succumbed to his injuries.
