A garbage truck belonging to Cevons Waste Management burst into flames on Sheriff Street, Georgetown yesterday morning most likely as a result of combustible material that was among the garbage. This, the company said, brings to the fore the issue of garbage sorting and recycling.

Cevons Chief Executive Officer, Morse Archer, told Stabroek News yesterday that three men were on board at the time of the fire and all escaped unscathed. A public-spirited citizen while driving along the road noticed smoke emanating from the truck and alerted the men on board. He stated that they are not 100 per cent sure what caused the fire but based on the information received, it started at the back of the truck where garbage is held. Archer noted that combustible material might have been amidst regular garbage and ignited the fire. The truck was damaged by the fire and a replacement was made available to manage the regular schedule.

Archer disclosed that the company has been engaged in a recycling exercise and he has invited the relevant authorities to get on board to implement garbage sorting. He explained that the combustibles would also cause small fires at the landfills when the garbage is emptied. “Sorting is a very, very good thing, it’s just for the relevant authorities to come on board”, he said.
