Guyana, US working together on reported security threat – President

President Irfaan Ali yesterday said that reported threats to US interests here in Guyana are being dealt with by the two governments

President Ali told a press conference at the National Track and Field Facility at Leonora that Guyana and the United States government are working together to address the reported security threat.

“There is great collaboration between the US and Guyana in dealing with a security issue, and that is as far as I will go”,  President Ali said at a Region 3 outreach.

His statement came just two days after the United States Embassy in Georgetown issued a release to the public and to US citizens stating that there will be an increase in security protocols due to threats here against US interests.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we want to inform U.S. citizens that the embassy has increased security protocols due to receiving threats against U.S. interests.” The U.S Embassy statement said.

Without getting into specifics as to what those threats were, the U.S. Embassy asked that citizens stay alert and exercise heightened caution.

In the past, the U.S. has issued travel precautions to its citizens about going to certain places at specified times.

Also without getting into details into what the threats are since according to him security matters are sensitive, Ali repeated that his Government and the US Government are currently working together since it is a very “serious matter”.
