A slap in the face of Cummings Lodge residents

Dear Editor,

With the completion of the access road east of the University of Guyana, hundreds of drivers have been using it in the mornings and afternoons to pass through Sophia and escape the bumper to bumper traffic on the Railway Embankment. Many of them especially those from Ogle and Industry use Sixth Street, Cummings Lodge as an easier route to Sophia.

In June last year with the assistance of reporters of the Stabroek News, I highlighted the deplorable state of this now very important road and after a long wait some works were done after about six months. This project was advertised on a notice in front of the Hindu Temple as being done by the Ministry of Communities for $14M which means that it was rolled over from the previous Government. Now as a result of heavy traffic this street has developed some huge craters on the eastern half and it is traumatic to witness drivers cursing each other whilst jostling for space in the presence of school children being forced to walk on the muddy parapet.

Editor it has been amusing to witness this Government for the past two years trying to court non-traditional supporters in Sophia and recently Plaisance leading up to the Local Government Elections while ignoring Cummings Lodge and South Cummings Lodge. Since the first LGE, Cummings Lodge has been responsible for victory for the PPP in Constituency Six, Georgetown on all occasions yet they did not find it necessary to even pay us a visit during the last two years although a Minister lives on the very eyesore for a street.

I was compelled to write this letter when on Friday afternoon, June 09 I read on Inews and Minister Edghill’s Facebook page that $809M in Contracts were signed off to rehabilitate roads in Region Four including three in Sophia, some in Plaisance but none in Cummings Lodge. This is a slap in the face of residents especially motorists and school children who use this road to reach their destination in a timely manner.

Yours sincerely,

R. Khan
