Sandiford crowned New National Junior Chess Champion

Keron Sandiford has been crowned the new National Junior Chess Champion following the conclusion of the Milex Championship at the National Stadium, Providence.

This was disclosed by an official release from the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF). Sandiford clinched the title in his final match, ending on an impressive total of eight points in nine rounds, after his opponent Kishan Puran resigned on his 30th move.

Sandiford also recorded wins against siblings Ethan and Ronan Lee, brothers Nicholas, and Alexander Zhang, dethroned Junior Champion Ricardo Narine, and Oluwadare Oyeyipo. Sandiford drew with Matthew Singh and Kyle Couchman to end with a record of seven wins, two draws, and no defeats.

Meanwhile, U14 champion Couchman ended in the runner-up position with seven points, whilst Ethan Lee completed the top three with 6.5 points. Singh [six points], Oluwadare [5.5 points], Narine [four points], Ronan Lee [3.5 points], Nicholas Zhang [2.5 points], Alexander Zhang [two points] and Puran [1 point] finished in fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.

Meanwhile, the GCF will stage the National Women’s Chess Qualifiers on July 29th, where the resulting top finishers will advance to the National Championship.
