Diamond businessman robbed of $6M at his home

A 32-year-old businessman of Diamond, East Bank Demerara was on Saturday robbed of $6 million by three armed and masked gunmen.

Police said that Wange Wi, a Chinese businessman, was robbed on Saturday at about 02:30 hrs. allegedly by three men armed with handguns, two of whom were wearing ski masks to cover their faces.

According to the evidence gathered so far, the victim resides in the upper flat of a three-storey concrete building. The second flat is a storage room while the lower flat is a hardware store. The victim and his 31-year-old wife occupy a bedroom on the upper flat.

The victim told the police that on Saturday around 20:00 hrs he closed his business place and checked off his sales, which amounted to $6 million. He took the money into his room and placed it in a black haversack, he told the police.

According to him at about 02:00 hrs, he was aroused by the sound of someone shouting ‘where is the money’. The businessman said he was confronted by the three suspects who held him and his wife at gunpoint, tied their hands behind their backs and tied their feet together. He told the police the men ransacked the room, removed the cash which was inside the black haversack and escaped. 

The suspects gained entry by climbing onto the northern side of the roof, cutting holes in the zinc and ceiling which is made of sheetrock and jumping into the open area of the upper flat, where they gained entry into the victim’s bedroom.

Two sets of latent fingerprints were lifted from the DVR which the suspects removed, but forgot to take with them.

The victim later managed to free himself and wife and reported the matter to the police. Investigations are ongoing.
