Commonwealth Youth Games delegation arrives in Trinidad

A podium chasing outfit of track and field athletes and swimmers arrived in Trinidad and Tobago yesterday on a quest to return with hardware from the Commonwealth Youth Games which gets underway tomorrow.

The seventh edition of the week long games dubbed ‘Trinbago2023’, is set for an exhilarating showcase of youthful talent and friendship.Guyana’s eight athletes and five officials touched down in the Twin Island Republic and are eagerly anticipating the thrill of the competition and camaraderie.

 According to reports, this year’s games will kick off at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain with a Carnival inspired ceremony which promises to be an unforgettable experience as young competitors from across the Commonwealth vie for supremacy in the seven sports.The sports disciplines being contested are  track and field, beach volleyball, fast5 netball, rugby, swimming and cycling.

Tianna Springer, the CARIFTA Games and South American U-20 Championship 400m gold medalist, will lead Guyana’s medal charge. 

The other athletes are Javon Roberts, Attoya Harvey, Malachai Austin and Narissa McPherson.

The swimmers are Ariel Rodrigues, Elliott Gonsalves and Shareefah Lewis.

Springer and Gonsalves will be the flag bearers for Team Guyana at the opening ceremony.

The five officials on the week long sojourn  are, Team Leader, Nalini McKoy, Coaches Julian Edmonds and Shyka Gonsalves, Doctor Victor Allen and Physiotherapist, Vanessa Wickham.
