Benjamin Ukomuo, (no address stated) yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus to answer to the charge of escaping lawful custody.

It is alleged that on 31st July, at around 8:20 hours while in custody awaiting deportation at the Central Immigration and Passport Office, Camp Road, Georgetown, the defendant escaped.

The Georgetown Magistrate’s Court heard that Ukomuo complained to ranks that he was feeling unwell. The police in turn summoned an ambulance which arrived moments later. While persons were attending to the ‘unwell’ defendant, he picked up a scissors off a table and threatened to kill those attending to him including the ranks. He then escaped. The defendant was arrested sometime after and was charged with the offence.

When asked by the Magistrate how he pled, Ukomuo responded, ‘guilty with explanation’. He told the court that he did not threaten anyone with the scissors but instead he took the scissors to cut his pants since it was tight and he was not feeling well. Bail was refused and the accused was remanded to prison until 14th August for statements.
