Desmond Amsterdam put on a praiseworthy performance in the light heavyweight gold medal bout last night at the AMBC Championship in Cali, Colombia but had to settle for the silver medal following a close points loss to Canada’s Keven Beausjour.

Despite not ascending to the top of the podium, Amsterdam, a bronze medalist at the event last year, has now qualified for the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

Featherweight, Keevin Allicock, a bronze medalist at this year’s Championships, will also join him in Chile by virtue of being a semifinalist.

On his way to the finals, Amsterdam won three bouts in as many nights, a herculean effort for the reigning Sportsman-of-the-Year who will have a chance to clinch an Olympic berth in Chile. The Pan Am Games, set for October 20 to November 5, is a qualifier for Paris 2024.  The pair, along with Coach on the sojourn, Terrence Poole, will now return home with aspirations of excelling in Chile.
