Fisherman remanded over murder in 2022

Twenty-two-year-old Suraj Janbar, called “Flowery”, a fisherman of Lusignan Pasture, East Coast Demerara, appeared yesterday at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Fabayo Azore to answer to the capital charge of murder that was laid against him.

It is alleged that on November 11th, 2022, the defendant murdered Delon Hendricks. The defendant was not required to enter a plea. He was remanded to prison until 2nd October, 2023.

It was reported in the Stabroek News that Hendricks, 26, of 91 Buxton Sideline Dam, East Coast Demerara died from haemorrhagic shook due to incised wounds to the  neck. Hendricks’ brother- in-law, Steve Ageday, had told Stabroek News that he, Hendricks and a friend left the construction site where they worked after they were paid their wages and were hanging out at a pool shop located in Lusignan.

He said they were all drinking Guinness and playing ‘Super Bet’. According to Ageday, Hendricks had won extra money from playing a ‘Super Bet’ game. Ageday said that he left the pool shop at around 10 pm and headed home on his bicycle as he felt bored. He added that he constantly asked Hendricks to come with him but he, Hendricks, refused. He eventually left leaving Hendricks and the friend playing ‘Super Bet’, but not before giving his brother-in-law $20,000 in cash to keep. The next morning, Ageday said he enquired of Hendricks but Hendricks’s common-law wife, Alexis Ageday, a mother of two, and with a baby on the way, told him that she stayed up all night waiting on Hendricks to come home, but he never arrived.

The brother-in-law said he and his family immediately went in search of Hendricks thinking that he had stayed by their friend that night. During the search, Ageday said persons with whom Hendricks was familiar with told him that Hendricks was found the night before with multiple stab wounds to the left side of the neck. Ageday said he and the family then visited the police station and after providing a description of Hendricks, the police took the family to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home to inspect the still unidentified body. After confirming that the body was indeed Hendricks’, Ageday and family were then taken to the spot where Hendricks’s body was found.
