A single mother is now at her wit’s end after the house she was residing in at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice suddenly collapsed while she and her eight-year-old daughter were inside on Thursday evening.

Kamlawattie Ramnauth, 37, yesterday explained that around 10.30 pm on Thursday evening she closed her door and headed inside when she suddenly heard wood crackling and knocking sounds coming from outside.

She said she immediately rushed to her daughter and grabbed her. However, at that stage, the wooden structure collapsed with the two inside.

According to Ramnauth, she has resided in the structure which desperately needed repairs before its collapsed for over nine years.

The woman who rides and sells plantain chips noted that some two years ago she became a single mother after she separated from her partner. She said that she has been riding and selling in an effort to take care of herself and daughter. 

Yesterday she noted that due to the structure collapsing she sustained a minor injury to her wrist but was glad that her daughter was able to escape unharmed.

She said, “Everything break down and we can’t go in back to see what damage or take out anything because the house falling more, we frighten to go in, we left it just so and we staying by the neighbour.”
