Man charged with killing Sophia horse cart operator

Desan Husbands called ‘Meds’ (address not stated) was charged yesterday with manslaughter following the death of a Sophia horse cart operator.

Husbands appeared before Chief Magistrate (ag) Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magis-trate’s Court.

The particulars of the offence stated that on Monday, August 14, at Plum Park, South Sophia, the defendant unlawfully killed Mark Harris called ‘DoDo’

The court heard that both Husbands and Harris are from Plum Park, South Sophia and were known to each other and had had several misunderstandings prior to the incident.

On the day in question at about 20.30 hours, the accused was walking in Plum Park, South Sophia on his way home when he saw Harris walking towards him. The accused then went into a nearby shop and purchased a bottle of Guinness and Harris also walked into the same shop. The accused then left the shop and Harris walked out behind the accused without purchasing anything. The two then got into an argument and Harris pulled out a knife and ‘fired’ it at the accused, who responded by pulling out a pair of scissors from his pants pocket and stabbing Harris in the chest.

Harris was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital by public-spirited persons and was pronounced dead on arrival. Meanwhile, the accused walked to the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost and reported the matter to the police. He was subsequently informed of the allegation, cautioned and arrested, and the scissors taken from him. An audio and video interview was conducted where the accused admitted to the offence.

Meanwhile in court the defendant expressed remorse and begged the Magistrate to grant him bail.

However, the police prosecutor objected to bail given the seriousness and prevalence of the offence.

Bail was refused.

Husbands is scheduled to make his next court appearance on September 14 for statements.
