The Guyana contingent with president of the Guyana Boxing Association Steve Ninvalle are ready for the ringing of the first bell.

The Winfred Braithwaite Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Championship got underway yesterday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, following the arrival of Barbados, St. Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago.

This was confirmed by an official press release from the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA).

The three countries who arrived Thursday evening, joins Grenada and hosts Guyana in the five-nation championship, which is the largest to date since the tournament’s 2016 inception.

GBA President Steve Ninvalle said during brief remarks, “The games are really and truly underway with the arrival of the participating nations. The Winfield Braithwaite Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Championship has evolved to assume an immeasurable role and importance in the English-speaking Caribbean community. This event provides a measuring stick for the respective nurseries, which is the foundation for the continued existence of the discipline in the respective countries.”

He added, “Clearly, this is understood and evident by the support that continues to be afforded to this burgeoning developmental platform, which is not only beneficial to Guyana but the entire Caribbean boxing community.”

The event will conclude tomorrow at the same venue. In each edition, Guyana has emerged as the overall champion.
