Venezuelan woman confesses to murdering man in Puruni backdam – police

A man of Amerindian descent, known only as ‘Sunny’ was stabbed to death following an argument with a Venezuelan woman at Kumung Kumung Backdam, Puruni River, Region 7.

A 23-year-old woman has confessed to the killing. Police say the incident occurred between August 17th and 18th.

Investigations have thus far revealed that around 11 pm on Thursday, ‘Sunny’ (age, address, and other particulars unknown) was in the company of two female Venezuelan nationals and others imbibing at a shop when he approached one of the females and requested a dance. The Venezuelan woman declined his advances but ‘Sunny’ held on to her. She pushed him off, and an argument ensued between the two. According to eyewitnesses, the female broke two bottles and threatened `Sunny’. Persons at the shop attempted to calm the situation, but Sunny began to behave disorderly and assaulted two of the men trying to subdue him. The two men, in turn, dealt ‘Sunny’ several cuffs and lashes about his body.

Sunny was later taken to his camp in an intoxicated state and, sometime after, retired to bed. At around 6 on Friday morning, the woman was seen running away from ‘Sunny’s’ camp. He was later discovered lying motionless covered in blood in his hammock. Police, on arrival at the scene, examined the body, and three stab wounds were seen. The woman was arrested by the police. Police also arrested Joel Moore, called ‘Alligator’, a 23-year-old miner and Elton Booker, called ‘Ratty’, a 22-year-old miner, the two persons who allegedly assaulted ‘Sunny’ at the shop.

The woman was interviewed by detectives at the Bartica Police Station on Saturday, during which she confessed to stabbing the victim with a retractable knife that she had in her possession. During the interview, she was cautioned by the police and told of the allegation of the murder of ‘Sunny’, to which she admitted whilst stating that he had attacked her earlier in the night in question after she refused to dance with him. The suspect further stated that she went to the victim’s camp later that night, where she saw him lying in a hammock. She said she took a retractable knife and dealt ‘Sunny’ three stabs about his body.
