Miner dies in boat collision on Mazaruni River

A 35-year-old miner of Isseneru Village, Middle Mazaruni River, Region Seven, died in a boat accident on Sunday evening. A boat captain has been arrested and is in police custody assisting with the investigation.

Dead is 35-year-old Terrence Maxwell Calistro, a miner of Isseneru Village, Middle Mazaruni River.

Police say they are investigating the death of Calistro which occurred at about 7.30 pm on Sunday.

Enquiries revealed that Shane Benn, a 25-year-old miner of Isseneru Village was at Hymarco Landing, Mazaruni River, when he was asked by Alric Da Silva, a 38-year-old miner, to take him to his home in Isseneru Village with his boat, to which he agreed.

Da Silva was equipped with a torchlight, and while proceeding, he saw a boat in the distance and informed the captain (Benn) of this. However, the captain failed to divert and collided with the boat, piloted by the now-deceased man, who was the only occupant. He subsequently flung into the water.

They quickly turned around and checked the water but could not find Calistro. Benn subsequently reported the matter to the Enachu Police Station. A search was launched and at about 11 am yesterday, Calistro’s body was found on the left side of the river bank.

Upon examination, the body was found to have a gaping wound to the left side of the head. The body will be transported to Bartica for a post-mortem examination.

Benn was arrested and is in custody assisting with the ongoing investigation.
