Carmel Secondary was yesterday presented with their championship trophy and prizes for winning the eighth  Digicel Schools Football Tournament at the Cara Lodge Hotel.

Carmel prevailed 3-1 over St. Ignatius of Region #9 in the final on August 13th.

They officially received their first-place prize of $1,000,000 towards a school project. For their efforts, St. Ignatius received $500,000 towards a school program. Similarly, DC Caesar Fox of Region #7 and Waramuri of Region #1 received their prizes of $300,000 and $200,000, respectively, towards a school initiative.

Troy Mendonca, the Co-Director of the Petra Organization, congratulated Carmel on their achievement, as well as the other three semi-finalists, noting that the tournament was very successful and that the network of coordinators, led by principal organiser Lavern Fraser-Thomas should be commended, as they played a pivotal role in the event’s realization.

He added that all the participating schools and teachers should also be recognised for their contributions to the event’s eventual success, positing that Digicel should be commended for creating the biggest school tournament and that the event creates a major incentive for students to remain in school, which is the empowering nature of sports.

Communications Manager Gabriella Chapman, congratulated Carmel on their historic feat, noting that the company believes in the empowerment of youth through education and sports, which will ultimately transform their respective lives. She also praised the Petra Organization for staging a flawless tournament and thanked all the stakeholders who played a pivotal role in its success.

Meanwhile, Twana McCalmon, Physical Education and Sports Officer of the Ministry of Education said that the entity has always supported the Petra Organization and their respective programs, as they have proven to be a valuable partner in the development of the school football program, adding that resources and sponsorship are required to aid in the aforesaid developmental process and that Digicel should be applauded for their efforts in resuming the championship.
