Dear Editor,
Permit me to chime in on the growing vehicular accidents occurring across our beloved nation. It is understandable that Guyana is developing with increases of motor vehicles on our expanding roadways, yet, accidents continue to occur. Some are deadly, while some are just a simple scratch or graze.
Recently, I was involved in an accident while turning into Brickdam off of Vlissengen road and another driver (who isn’t Guyanese) created his own lane by under taking the traffic and T-Boned my car, his reaction and response was that I was speeding, although upon impact the car spun into a different direction. Lo and behold we are going through the court process.
While I’m still emotionally traumatized from this accident, it is scary on our roadways when buses undertake and people drive on the shoulders of our roadways. When drivers fail to dead stop and take heed of the road, when drivers stop without a care of what’s coming towards them or what’s behind them.
My recommendations are to have more functioning stop lights, clearly marked roads, and visible signage in addition to more police presence throughout the day at critical junctions.
