Consider having medical officers on lengthy voyages

Dear Editor,

The report that persons had health issues recently on the Mabaruma/Gt ferry route, prompts that maybe, given the voyage is a lengthy one, that consideration be given to a medical personnel, such as a medex, be employed on board the vessel.  Persons, particularly the elderly, will encounter issues of varying degrees and prompt attention can make the difference.  Also some medication and first aid items should be kept on board as was necessary in the recent case. Of course passengers also have a responsibility to ensure they have their medications and aids with them. Good work by all who responded to the medical emergencies aboard the boat.

My condolences to the family of the deceased.

Sincerely,

Shamshun Mohamed
