On Friday, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) and Champion of Hop (NGO) launched Pinktober 2023 at the Marriott Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown.

Pinktober was launched in observance of Cancer Awareness Month which will be commemorated in October, a release from the Ministry of Health said. The theme for this year is “Many Hands, Caring Hearts” and will focus on the primary goal to increase cancer awareness in Guyana, with a sharp focus on critical areas such as screening, treatment and palliative care.

The Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony who was present at the ceremony, said that Guyana’s health sector continues to battle the high incidences of cancers, like every other country.

“In October we generally focus more on breast cancer but cancer generally is a big problem in our country; breast cancer is the number one leading cancer among women, cervical cancer is the second leading cancer among women. Among men prostate is the number one leading cancer”, he stated.

Anthony reminded those present that cancer is everyone’s business and appealed for everyone to do their part in the fight against cancer.

Among those present at the ceremony were Eshwar Thakurdin, Deputy Chief Operations Officer for GTT; Diana Gittens, Operations Manager WeSolve CX; Dr Lotoya Gooding attached to the Giving Hope Foundation; Pameshwarie Seodat from the Cancer Institute of Guyana; Andrea Joseph attached to the Periwinkle Club Inc; Andrea King, Miss World Guyana 2022 and other Health officials and cancer survivors.
