Boy, 9, killed after teenager loses control of car

A nine-year-old Enterprise Primary School pupil was struck down and killed while on his way to church yesterday morning by a teen driver who had allegedly taken his father’s car without his permission.

According to reports, Daniel Heywood and his siblings were on their way to church around 10:00 hrs yesterday, when he stopped to tie his shoelace and was struck down by the teen driver in the vicinity of 12th Street, Dazzell Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara.

Stabroek News was told that the driver is a 16-year-old boy who resides in the area. The incident saw Heywood being flung into the nearby trench, from where he was rescued and rushed to the Dr CC Nicholson Hospital at Nabaclis. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His mother, Shanti Heywood, told Stabroek News that her children left for church and at about 10:15am she received a phone call informing her that her child had been struck down and taken to the hospital. Shanti added that her other children explained that they had stood on a bridge and waited for Daniel to tie his shoelace.

Shanti added that the teen related that he was driving on the “crusher run” when he lost control of the car and collided with her son.

The tearful mother also recounted that her son had been excited about the upcoming school’s sports.

Investigations are ongoing.
