Circuitville infant dies from head injuries

A one-year-old baby yesterday afternoon died of multiple head injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital, according to a police report.

Dead is Raheem Fung, of Circuitville, Yarrowkabra (Linden-Soesdyke High-way).

Police have detained a 28-year-old woman also of Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway as part of ongoing investigations into the incident. She worked as a babysitter.

The injuries were reportedly sustained between 1st July 2023 and 15th Septem-ber 2023 at Yarrowkabra.

The baby resided with his parents Rhonda Kortright and Kevin Fung.  The babysitter also lives at Yarrowkabra with her one-year-old daughter.

During July 2023, Rhonda and Kevin left Raheem in the care and custody of the 28-year-old.  She took care of him from Monday to Saturday.

According to the police report, the babysitter contacted  and informed the mother of the toddler that her son had fallen and hit his head. He was taken to the GPHC with a swollen forehead, and he was treated and sent away in a healthy condition, after which he remained in the care and custody of the babysitter.

On 15 September 2023, at about 19:30 hrs the babysitter  again contacted Rhonda, this time informing her that Raheem had suffered a seizure and lost consciousness.

The toddler was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre by his mother, where he was examined and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted as a patient in the ICU, on a life-support machine, suffering from multiple head injuries.

Investigations are ongoing.
