AAG names IGG track and field team

The Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) yesterday named its contingent for this year’s Inter Guiana Games (IGG) scheduled for October 26-31 in Suriname.  

Following its trials last Saturday, the AAG has selected a formidable team of 26 athletes, 13 males and 13 females.  

As expected, the unit will be spearheaded by the record breaking Youth Commonwealth Games mixed 4x400m relay quartet of Tianna Springer, Malachi Austin, Javon Roberts and Narissa McPherson. 

The four dominated in their respective individual events at the trials which were  staged at the Police Progressive Youth Club. 

Springer, a gold medalist in the 400m at this year’s CARIFTA Games, the South American U-20 Championships and the Youth Commonwealth Games, expectedly won the quarter mile race and the 200m event to record another sprint double. 

Austin won the men’s 400m and Roberts crossed the line first in the 800m and 1500m races. McPherson placed second in the 400m and was victorious in the 800m event.

Boys 

Austin (200m, 400m), Roberts (800m,1500m), Ezekiel Newton (100m,200m) , Jaheel Cornette (100m) , Afi Blair (400m), Kaiden Persaud (800m and javelin), Jamal Sullivan (1500m, 5000m), David Bovell (5000m), Jamie Fraser and Jahiem Henry (shot put and discus), Robert Marcus (javelin), Rondell Green and Emanuel Adams (long jump and triple jump and high jump).

Girls 

Springer (200m and 400m), McPherson (400m and 800m),  Kristal Morris (100m), Athaleya Hinckson (100m, 200m), Marissa Thomas (800m, 1500m), Esther McKinnon (1500m, 3000m), Donel Fraser (3000m), Latifa James (shot put and discus), Tamara Mingo (shot put), Amrist Hector (long jump and triple jump),Tamara Harvey (long jump), Kristal Morris (triple jump) and Zeryssa McRae (high jump).

Managing the team will be Kenisha Headley, while the coaches will be Christopher Gaskin, Robin Phillips and Carlotta Rodney. 

Noelex Holder will be tasked with the duties of Physiotherapist.

 This year, 10 disciplines will be contested during the games which involves Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. They are track and field, badminton, basketball, volleyball, football, tennis, table tennis, futsal, chess and swimming. 

The disciplines of basketball and football will involve players 17 years and under, while the other disciplines will cater for athletes 18 years and under.
