Health and safety officials in accident investigation training

The Ministry of Labour, in collaboration with Global People Services and Management (GPSM) Consultants Inc., yesterday launched a two-day accident and incident investigation training programme.

A release from the Ministry of Labour said that Vincent Garth, trainer and principal consultant/ business crisis consultant is facilitating the training, which aims to provide safety and health officials with the necessary knowledge and skills to execute a comprehensive accident and incident investigation on the job.

The training is being attended by representatives from the Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health Department, Aurora Gold Mines/Zijin Mining Group Company, Guyana Power & Light Incorporated, and Massy Distribution.

Minister of Labour,  Joseph Hamilton; Occupational Safety and Health Consultant, Gweneth King; GPSM’s Business Development Manager,  Tishauna Edwards; and GPSM’s Administration and HR Planning Manager, Shevon Bowen, attended the opening ceremony held in the ministry’s boardroom.

The release said that Hamilton spoke briefly on the critical role that a safety and health officer plays within their organization and how the training helps to enhance their knowledge to execute their responsibilities effectively to safeguard workers’ safety.

Since assuming office in August 2020, the release said that the OSH department has been able to reduce workplace fatalities by 16 percent in 2021, with a further 20 percent decrease in 2022.

For 2022, the release said that the department was able to undertake 1298 inspections countrywide in both the private and public sectors, meeting the inspection objective by 85 percent.
