Investigate all angles including possible flouting of US’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act

Dear Editor,

The Vice President’s comment that Exxon will not be a part of the investigation into the pre-production expenses’ audit is dangerous. We do not know what took place so the investigation must be examined from every angle. According to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of the USA, it is unlawful for a U.S. company, or a US person, to even attempt to persuade foreign officials by illegal means in business dealings. Basically, bribing of a foreign official is a serious crime. For this very reason, CRG calls on the current administration to reach out to the US government for assistance with the investigation to determine if foul play occurred in an attempt to change the findings of the expense audit. The investigation should be conducted by investigators who are external to the Ministry with oversight for the sector. Having the subject minister conduct the investigation is inappropriate. Recent comments by Ram and (former) President Ramotar must be taken seriously and be a part of the investigation.

Sincerely,

Jamil Changlee
