A 25-year-old labourer of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, who was attempting to defend his wife’s honour, was stabbed to death on Saturday night after he accosted the man who was harassing her.

According to the police, the murdered man, Mark Hilliman, was employed at Gafoors Complex at Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara. The suspect, who is identifiable, but whose name and address are not known, is currently being sought.

The police said investigations revealed that an argument between the two men started in KFC on Water Street and ended between Longden and Croal Street around 22:00 hrs on Saturday, where Hilliman met his demise.

Around 21:35 hrs on Saturday, the victim’s reputed wife (who is employed at the KFC outlet on Water Street) was on duty when the suspect, who is not known to her, entered her place of employment and began interfering with her, the police said.

During that time, the victim also entered the KFC outlet and on observing what was occurring, told the suspect to desist from interfering with his wife. A heated argument ensued between the men, who were reportedly both armed with knives. They left the KFC building, and were heading east between Longden and Croal Street, when the suspect stabbed the victim to his left side chest. The victim walked a short distance and fell to the ground, while the suspect made good his escape on foot.

The victim was picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor. The body is at the GPH’s Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The police questioned several people and are currently reviewing the tapes of CCTV cameras in the area as investigations continue.
