Region Two officials fret over power outages

Region Two Chair Vilma De Silva is requesting answers from the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) company as it relates to the frequent power outages experienced by the region.

The constant power outages that plague the region were raised on Wednesday at the Regional Democratic Council’s (RDC) statutory meeting for the month of October.

People’s Progressive Party/Civic Councillor Arnold Adams said that officials from the company are not attending the works committee meetings and as such the region does not have answers to provide to residents. He said that the region has been experiencing frequent power outages without any notice. This, he said, needs to be rectified.

De Silva said that the region will be writing the company as the regional administration officials should know what is going on. She also noted that the officials from the company should also attend meetings.

De Silva said that the Region Two Administration is not satisfied and needs answers. As such, a letter will be written by the clerk of the RDC to GPL officers concerning the matter.

Meanwhile, the business community in the region is bitterly complaining of the frequent power outages. The region is getting power outages almost every day and no notice has been issued by GPL informing residents. Students who are studying with Jain Online through the GOAL scholarship programme recently had their examinations and were victims of the power outages. Residents have complained that they are experiencing low voltage and it is damaging their electrical appliances.

This newspaper tried contacting the GPL Public Relations Officer but calls went unanswered.
