AFC addresses high cost of living, inflation, Venezuelan refugees at NEC meeting

The Alliance for Change (AFC) on Saturday concluded its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting where issues such as the high cost of living, inflation and bad governance under the PPP/C were topics of discussion.

According to a press release, AFC Leader and Member of Parliament Khemraj Ramjattan during his presentation at the meeting discussed the present political and economic situation, the high cost of living, inflation, infighting within the PPP and its bad governance in relation to the ExxonMobil contract and discrimination in infrastructure contracts.

Ramjattan requested that AFC party activists be seen more publicly despite the victimization and fear the PPP inculcates, according to the release.

Chairman of the AFC Cathy Hughes MP reported to the group on the recently concluded successful meeting with the US Congressional Black Caucus, US Democratic Congressman Hakeem Jeffries and the party’s participation in the diaspora conference in Washington DC, it added.

The release indicated that reports were highlighted by the AFC’s regional representatives in relation to the unfair allocation of government contracts to people with limited experience and the resulting low quality of infrastructure works. “The consistency of this issue across all regions and the incidence of corrupt practices continues to be alarming,” the AFC stated in the release.

There were grave concerns over reports from regions One, Three, Seven, Eight and Nine  of the large number of Venezuelans residing in the respective regions allegedly undocumented, according to the political party.

The release further mentioned that substantiated reports were received of these Venezue-lans overrunning Region One, including the Warrau district. It noted that the sensitive border controversy between Guyana and Venezue-la, which is currently before the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, was awaiting resolution.

As part of the AFC’s discussion on the way forward, it stressed the need for constitutional reform, the need for legislation to facilitate biometrics and the residency requirement for a new voters’ list, prior to the next national and regional elections.

The party also renewed its commitment towards ensuring that Guyanese benefit equitably from the country’s natural resources, and the need for fair dispensation when allocating these resources.
