Policeman seriously injured in Corentyne crash

A police constable is currently hospitalised in a serious condition, nursing a fractured right hand and head injuries, following a crash involving a police pick-up and a lorry.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 04:30 hrs on the Number 72 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice. The pickup, PAE 1659, owned by the Guyana Police Force and attached to Springlands Police Station Anti-crime Unit was proceeding south along the eastern lane, the police said. The driver of  the lorry, GLL 2841, however, said that the pickup was in the western lane, and he had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision. Despite this the pickup collided with the right side cab of the lorry.

As a result of the collision, the driver and two other policemen, along with the lorry driver and occupants sustained injuries to their bodies. They were taken to Skeldon Public Hospital by public-spirited citizens. One of the policemen was treated and sent away and another was kept at the hospital for observation. The policeman who was driving was treated for a fractured right hand and head injuries and later referred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. His condition is regarded as serious.
