Teacher in Bartica assault video sent on administrative leave – Manickchand

A Bartica teacher at the centre of a controversy where he could be seen in a video assaulting a student over the type of socks worn has been sent on administrative leave.

This was confirmed by Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, when contacted yesterday by Stabroek News.

It was just a few days ago, that a video filmed by someone in a Bartica Secondary School classroom showed a confrontation between the teacher and a male student.

The 24-second clip, which went viral on social media showed that the two were in a classroom filled with students when the incident occurred. In it, the student could be seen refusing to take off socks which were not acceptable according to the school’s dress code.

As a consequence of his refusal, the student was hit by the teacher with a T-square and pushed into a chair. The student was seen trying to get up and walk away from the teacher.

The student could be heard shouting, “Boy, why are you lashing me for,” and the teacher responded, “I getting serious with you. You are wasting my time. Hey, take off the socks, Think I joking with you.”

The teacher again attempted to push the student into the chair this time causing him to fall to the floor. It was then the teacher proceeded to remove the student’s shoe, and take off the socks while the student was on the floor.
