The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) is all set to deliver an exciting weekend of cricket as teams battle it out in a series of fixtures including the first set of matches in the Demerara Distillers Limited Pepsi first-division 50-overs tournament.

The day starts with an enthralling clash between hosts, Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Everest at the DCC ground in the lone fixture today in this competition.

Tomorrow, however,  Georgetown Cricket Club will take on Transport at their home ground while Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) will face Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) in what promises to be a closely contested match at the MSC ground.

The DCC ground in Queenstown, will also host the battle of the lawmen with Police going up against Guyana Defence Force (GDF). GNIC will enjoy the bye on what promises to be an  action-packed Sunday.

Meanwhile over in the New Business Society’s 40-over second division tournament, the action kicks off today with Transport facing the GDF at Malteenoes, GCC hosting Ace Warriors, Police battling GNIC at Queen’s College and 4R Lions facing 3rd Class at MYO

Tomorrow, the weekend culminates with a match between Everest and 3rd Class at MYO. Cricket fans can expect an intense battle.

Beverage giant, Demerara Distillers Limited, has thrown its support behind the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)  by sponsoring the first division 50-Overs-a-side tournament  through their Pepsi brand.

The tournament was launched on Thursday at the Everest Cricket Club.

Pepsi brand manager Larry Wills, at the launch of the tournament, said; “We are proud to sponsor the first Pepsi GCA division-one 50-over tournament.

“We definitely can’t forget the grassroots tournaments that unearth potential talent. That’s the integral part of any sport discipline and we look forward to sponsoring many more tournaments because of the faith we have in the GCA”.

GCA Vice-President and former West Indies all rounder, Roger Harper pointed out; “We at the GCA have a history of efficiently running programmes. So we assure Mr. Wills and DDL of continuing in the same vein. It has been a while since the GCA has been able to run off a 50 over tourney and we hope a lot of young talent would emerge and be better able to strengthen the pool of talent in the country.

“A special thank you to Pepsi and DDL. We know this will be a successful tourney and we look forward to continuing the partnership,” Harper declared, before urging the participating clubs to play with the “passion and spirit that the GCA represents”.

The tournament will see Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC), Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), Muslim Youth Organization (MYO), Police (POL), Guyana Defence Force (GDF), GNIC, Transport Sports Club (TSC) and Everest Cricket Club (ECC) clash in a round robin format broken into two zones, ‘A’ and ‘B’ respectively.

Zone ‘A’ will see MSC, GDF, POL, MYO and GNIC do battle while Zone ‘B’ will have GCC, DCC, Everest and Transport in action. One team (randomly drawn) from Zone B will play another team twice to even things out in the round robin format. At the conclusion of the round robin stage, the top two teams will progress to the semi-finals.
