Cyclist dies in collision on Meten-Meer-Zorg public road

A 40-year-old pedal cyclist died yesterday morning in a collision on the Meten-Meer-Zorg public road.

The fatal accident occurred at about 6.45 am on the Meten-Meer-Zorg public road, West Coast Demerara, involving motor car, PAB 3984, owned and driven by a 25-year-old female resident of Leonora and pedal cyclist Cesar Olivares, a 40-year-old Venezuelan national of Meten-Meer-Zorg.

Enquiries revealed that the car in question was proceeding west along the Meten-Meer-Zorg public road at a normal rate of speed while the cyclist was proceeding in the same direction ahead of the motor car. It is alleged that the cyclist lost control of his bicycle and swerved into the path of the car. The driver promptly responded by swerving to avoid a collision, but the bicycle ended up colliding with the front portion of the car. As a result of the collision, the cyclist fell on the road with injuries to his body.

The car came to a stop on the parapet and Olivares was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital in a police vehicle, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The body was subsequently taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home to await a post-mortem examination.
