Barge that crashed into Berbice Bridge was stockpiling sand

The barge that recently crashed into the Berbice Bridge is  connected to a well-known company and was at the time stockpiling sand below the Canje Bridge.

On October, 14, the Berbice Bridge Company Inc. (BBCI) advised the public that a barge loaded with sand collided with the Berbice River Bridge resulting in truck, tractor, and freight vehicle owners and operators being informed that the weight limit for the Bridge will be reduced to twenty (20) tons.

The company said that the barge collided with the bridge on October, 13, just 20:30 hrs.

Sources at the bridge company have told Stabroek News, that the barge belongs to a businessman connected to a well-known company. The BBCI has not identified the owner of the barge that crashed into the bridge neither has it indicated the cost of the damage done.

According to the sources, the owner of the barge reportedly has a government contract to provide sand for a project and was stockpiling it under the Canje Bridge area when the incident happened.

Following the incident, BBCI said that commuters have to adhere to the Bridge’s speed limits: 30 KMH on the Carriageway and 15 KMH on the Ramps.

“These measures have been implemented for the safety of everyone. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation”, BBCI said.

It has also said that emergency repairs have to be done and these could lead to some delays.
