Truck driver charged with causing death of biker

Twenty-five-year-old, Dion Adam Richards appeared before Magistrate Alicia George at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

The accident involved a lorry, GAB 8067, owned by Build Smart Construc-tion and driven at the time by Richards, a 25-year-old from Diamond, East Bank Demerara, and motorcycle, CK 1795, owned and ridden by Curtly Christopher Cambridge (now deceased), a 32-year-old of Lot 1578 Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, George-town.

The lorry driver told investigators that he was proceeding west along the embankment road, and turned north into Agricul-ture Road. He said the motorcyclist was proceeding east along the railway embankment road at a fast rate and drove into the back of the lorry as it was turning into Agriculture Road.

As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist fell on the road and sustained injuries. An ambulance was summoned, and the motorcyclist was pronounced dead by emergency personnel.

The magistrate granted Richards bail at the sum of $400,000 dollars with the condition that he has to report on the 15th of every month to the Sparendaam Police station.

The matter was adjourn-ed to January 15, 2024, for disclosure.
