(Trinidad Guardian) Reena Ramadhar, 39, and her daughter Rehanna Bhaggan, 14, died when fire gutted their shack at Cemetary Street, Warner Village, Chaguanas around midnight yesterday.

Villagers said Ramadhar was unemployed and had stopped her daughter from school at the Chaguanas North Secondary School.

Ramadhar was facing financial problems and occasionally got work as a domestic helper.

The house had no electricity, and the family cooked on a fireside with wood.

The fire started in the kitchen, living room, and dining room.

A neighbour contacted the police around 12:40 am after observing through her CCTV camera that her neighbour’s house was on fire.

When the Fire Services arrived and extinguished the blaze, they found the charred remains in the bedroom area of the house. Neighbours described the house as a one-room small wooden structure. Police said they were unable to confirm the identities of the bodies since they were badly burnt.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained.

Chaguanas firefighters and police officers are investigating.

Her mother, who lives 150 feet north of her, was hospitalised last Friday for anaemia.
