Duty-free concessions will motivate teachers to remain in the profession

Dear Editor,

The decision by President Ali to grant duty-free concessions to eligible senior teachers is a commendable gesture. This will motivate teachers to remain in the profession which over the years have been experiencing a significant level of attrition. Teachers have also benefitted from significant salary adjustments and other non-salary benefits. As a former teacher, I am aware of the challenges faced by teachers. This was especially true during the pre-1992 period when salaries were highly depressed and teachers, like other public servants, were finding it difficult to survive on their incomes. Many were forced to ‘moonlight’ in order to make ends meet. We have come a long way since those difficult years. I have no doubt that as the economy grows more benefits will be given to teachers by the current PPP/C administration.

Sincerely,

Hydar Ally
