Maliah Morilla of Potaro Primary wins ministry essay contest

A virtual award ceremony was held yesterday for the winners of the Culturally Relevant Essay Writing Competition for Hinterland schools organized by the office of the Deputy Chief Education Officer (DCEO) (Amerindian and Hinter-land Education Development).

A release from the Ministry of Education said that the competition saw 75 entries from Regions one, two, seven, eight and nine reaching the office of the DCEO. Awards were given to the top four overall winners and five honorary winners, one from each participating region.

The overall winner was Maliah Morilla of Potaro Primary, Region Seven, whose letter was adjudged the best one. Arti Pershad of Santa Rosa Primary, Region One was adjudged the best composition writer, the release said.

The competition served as practice for the children preparing for the 2024 National Grade Six Assess-ment, allowing them to sharpen their writing skills, whilst telling culturally relevant stories or writing letters, addressing issues in their villages.

Joining the ceremony were children from Santa Rosa Primary and Hoso-roro Primary in Region One, Kabakaburi Primary in Region Two, Potaro Primary, St. Anthony’s Primary and Two Miles Primary in Region Seven and Micobie Primary in Region Eight, the release added.
