The MVP Sports Girls Pee Wee Football Championship is slated to commence on Saturday, November 18 and ahead of the kick-off, tournament coordinators, the Petra Organisation, conducted a ball distribution exercise and tournament briefing yesterday at the National Library, Church and Main streets.

Representatives from some of the competing teams were presented with the tournament rules and a ball to aid in their training for the competition, which will be held at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue.

The participating schools, who hail from Regions #3, #4, #6, #7, #10, and Georgetown, will be divided into five groups of four teams.

Group A throws together Potaro, FE Pollard, St. Gabriel’s, and Den Amstel, while Group B will see St. John the Baptiste, Smith Memorial, St. Margaret’s, and West Ruimveldt square off.

Group C is made up of Marian Academy, Soesdyke, All Saints, and One Mile, while North Georgetown, Colaaco, St. Aloysius, and Friendship will feature in Group D. Group E contains Tucville, Redeemer, Genesis, and Leonora.

Speaking at the briefing, Petra Organisation Co-Director Troy Mendonca shed some light on Petra’s decision to organise a girls’ competition.

“We were taken aback when some teams wanted to include their female players in the boys’ competition. That’s when it dawned on us that we should ensure this programme is hosted,”

He envisions a very competitive tournament.

On the other hand, Deputy Chief Education Officer (Hinterland) Marti De Souza noted that the Ministry of Education continues to emphasise the importance of sports, which is critical to the development of rounded students.

“Maybe some of you have the aspiration to reach as far as the Lady Jags team, this is where you start. Of course the challenges are there, some of you maybe in Grade 6 preparing for NGSA next year but at the same time, this is a good opportunity for you to be physically active and to balance your academics/ school work with physical exercise.”

The other playing dates are November 25th, December 2nd, and December 9th.
