Independence of this US fact-finding mission has been called into question

Dear Editor,

Disturbing revelations have come to light during the visit of the US delegation, indicating financial contributions from special interest anti-government groups.

These revelations, highlighting the funding of the team’s activities, including trips and meetings, by entities with clear biases against the government, raise serious concerns about the fairness and impartiality of the US representatives involved.

The involvement of such special interest groups, known for their opposition to the government, in financially supporting the delegation’s activities profoundly undermines the credibility and independence of the team’s purported fact-finding mission. It is deeply troubling that representatives of a foreign state, expected to uphold fairness and objectivity, would allow their activities to be funded by groups with vested interests and preconceived biases against the government.

This revelation starkly contradicts the principles of neutrality and integrity expected from “representatives” of a foreign nation engaging in fact-finding missions. It raises questions about the motives behind the delegation’s visit and casts doubt on the objectivity and impartiality of their assessments and conclusions regarding the situation in Guyana.

Foreign representatives, especially from a nation like the United States, are expected to adhere to the highest standards of objectivity, impartiality, and fairness in their engagements with other countries, rather than being influenced or supported by partisan interests.

The delegation’s connections to anti-government elements, both locally and abroad, raise significant apprehensions about the true nature of their objectives.

Their affiliations and biased pronouncements prior to arrival raise doubts about their impartiality in conducting a fair and balanced assessment of the situation in Guyana.

It must be noted that the Government has consistently demonstrated a commitment to promoting the welfare of all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, and has made significant strides in fostering national unity and progress.

Claims of widespread discrimination lack resonance within our society locally, as evident from the government’s track record of inclusivity and efforts to foster development across various sectors.

It’s important to highlight that while open to discussions, the government refuses to subject itself to individuals or groups who have already made conclusive judgements about Guyana based on prejudiced narratives.

The attempt to cast a shadow over our nation with claims of systemic discrimination and human rights violations contradicts the reality of our nation’s progress and stability.

Moreover, it is crucial to inquire if the visiting team has explored the constitutional mechanisms within Guyana to address alleged racism, rather than relying on biased sources and individuals with vested interests in perpetuating divisive narratives.

From all indications, the Guyana Government remains committed to open and balanced discussions, but stands firm in refusing to engage with entities or individuals whose motives and affiliations jeopardize the integrity of such discussions.

This administration invites objective and fair dialogue, but it emphasizes the importance of avoiding preconceived judgements and biased influences in understanding the true narrative of our nation.

Sincerely,

Alfonso De Armas
