Tiger Bay residents and a diverse group of volunteers teamed up with Unicomer Courts on Saturday to conduct a cleanup drive in Tiger Bay, Georgetown, demonstrating a strong sense of community spirit and cooperation.

According to a press release from Courts, to make the event a success, it collaborated with over 150 people, including volunteers from Policy Forum, Guyana’s Lions Club, the Leo Club of Georgetown Stabroek, the Lions Club of Georgetown Stabroek, Marian Academy, St Joseph High School, Smith Memorial Primary, and proactive Tiger Bay residents.

The volunteers braved the sun, working tirelessly and demonstrating their unwavering dedication to making a tangible difference in the neighbourhood, the release said.

The initiative not only aimed to prepare the surroundings for the anticipated influx of shoppers for the company’s upcoming “Giant Black Friday Sale” on November 24, but also served as a testament to the store’s commitment to building solid relationships with the community, the release said.

According to the release, Director of Merchandising and Marketing, Unicomer Guyana Eldri Ferguson-Mackey expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from all participating entities and individuals. “The success of this cleanup campaign truly exemplifies the power of collective action and community involvement. We are immensely proud to see such a diverse group come together to enhance our surroundings and create a welcoming atmosphere for all,” the release quoted her as saying.

The cleanup effort encompassed tasks such as litter collection, beautification projects of the flora along Main Street, and general maintenance activities throughout Tiger Bay. Participants were provided with cleaning tools, gloves, and garbage bags and treated with a snack, the release said.

“I was impressed by the energy, dedication and hard work displayed by our volunteers, the staff at courts and more importantly the residents of Tiger Bay. This project truly displayed what we can achieve when businesses, NGOs and communities work together for a common good,” Coordinator at Policy Forum Guyana Benita Rushana Davis was quoted as saying.

Unicomer Courts noted its long history with the Tiger Bay community. It has hosted initiatives to give back to the community over the years, which sits right at the doorstep of the Main Street store. This initiative marks a continuation of the efforts to maintain a strong relationship with the community, the release said.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined hands in this transformative cleanup effort. Your commitment to the community aligns with our values; we can do so much together. We look forward to more opportunities to create positive impacts together,” Public Relations Manager at Unicomer Guyana Raveena Manga was quoted as saying.

The company said it plans to organise a toy drive and fun day for the residents in December to ensure they feel involved in and a part of the growth of Courts.
