Prospect, Jaden Lewis, Pace, and Power Boxing Gym earned the marquee trophies when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) staged its Pepsi/Mike Parris Schoolboys and Juniors tournament yesterday at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Gym.

Lewis, a standout from the Rose Hall Jammers Boxing Gym, triumphed with a stoppage victory over Jaheim Vanveen to earn the coveted best boxer award at the event.

Yusuf Edwards of the Pace and Power Gym cornered opponent Curtis McDonald in one of the sequences in their three-round bout. Edwards was adjudged the winner on points.

In one of the most exciting bouts on the card, the 13-year-old and his opponent threw punches in bunches, much to the jubilation of the small but raucous crowd that circled the ring.

However, after flurries and mandatory standing counts just prior to the end of the second round, the referee stopped the contest and awarded the slick orthodox fighter another ‘W’ to his record.

The boxers and the gym from Pace and Power collectively stole the show, however, and tallied five points on the 10-fight card to lift the Best Gym trophy ahead of runner-up Rose Hall Jammers Boxing Gym, which finished with three points.

Other winners on the card yesterday included: Dreshawn Willery, Shawn Sabola, Ken Harvey, Yusuf Edwards, Leon Albert, Isaiah Ruiz, Kumunda Alexander, Shakqain James, and Chance Niles.

There was also an exhibition bout involving Nathaniel Bishop and Roopesh Balgobin, who celebrated his 12th birth anniversary yesterday.

At the conclusion of the event, Clifton Barker, Head Coach of the Pace and Power Gym, was announced as the winner of the Best Coach award. Paulette Nurse was adjudged the best referee or judge.

Notes: According to the Technical Director of the GBA, Terrence Poole, the next edition of the event is tentatively set for the next two weeks at the same venue. (Emmerson Campbell)
