The rugby selection committee will have their work cut out in order to name the 12-member squad for the upcoming Grenada 7s following three intense and highly competitive trial matches on Saturday at the National Park.

“The games were very competitive and intense” said president of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), Ryan Dey yesterday.

“We had a good turnout, we had some experienced players and even players that came in from overseas to earn a spot on the team. Dey reiterated, “It was very competitive especially for the positions for the wings, centres and hookers. In my opinion, those positions will be the hardest to choose from.

The union is scheduled to name its players tomorrow for the prestigious tournament which kicks off in the capital of the ‘Spice Isle’ on December 1.

While once again admitting that the selectors will be tasked with a tough assignment, Dey also opined that USA based, Tyrese Prescod, Owen Adonis, Jamal Angus and Kelvin Grant were some of the standout players that did impress him with their performances and perhaps will be part of the final 12.

What is certain however, the Grenada 7s, has attracted teams from the UK, USA, Canada, and the Caribbean.

It is the longest running Club Rugby 7s tournament in the region and has returned to Grenada for its second year. Eighteen of the world’s best Men’s and Women’s Elite 7s teams will compete in the two-day tournament for a US $20,000 total prize pool.

The local players will also be aiming to spring upsets and cash in on the incentives.
