Do not use calls for patriotism and national unity to obfuscate failures

Dear Editor,

The media has carried a statement from Guyana’s ‘Rights bodies’ to condemn Venezuela’s attempts to take over Essequibo. The statement seems to have originated from the Ethnic Relations Commission. One of the bodies which is listed as endorsing the statement is the Human Rights Commission. The Government and Parliament have never convened the Human Rights Commission in Guyana. These times of aggression and calls for patriotism and national unity must never be used to obfuscate Guyana’s failures to build a nation in which all citizens are guaranteed equality, and every citizen is assured of a life of dignity and rights.

Sincerely,

Vidyaratha Kissoon
