Leader of the Opposition Aubrey Norton, during an outreach in Essequibo yesterday, welcomed the ICJ’s (International Court of Justice) ruling ordering Venezue-la not to take any action that interferes with Guyana’s control over the Essequibo.

The Opposition Leader in a video said “As you know, the opposition supports the government on this matter and therefore we have an interest in the outcome of this matter.

“We believe that the ICJ has made an important decision and we now have to continue our diplomatic approach towards the matter, which maintains that Essequibo belongs to us and ensure that we monitor our borders so that there will be no aggression by Venezuela”, he said.

The 14-judge panel delivered a unanimous ruling in favour of Guyana which had requested provisional measures following Venezuela’s announcement of the referendum which is seen as an act of aggression intended to lay the path for annexation.

Norton disclosed that he and several opposition members will remain in Essequibo today for monitoring purposes as Venezuela forges ahead with its referendum.
