Housing Ministry fraud case still under probe – police

Almost two weeks after several persons were arrested by the police in relation to a housing fraud involving Ministry of Housing personnel, Regional Commander (Ag), Assistant Commissioner Simon McBean yesterday said that the matter is still being investigated.

He also informed this newspaper that no further arrest was made in the matter.

Meanwhile, Stabroek News contacted the Minister in the Ministry of Housing, Susan Rodrigues, yesterday for an update on the matter. She responded that she doesn’t have any comments at this time.

On November 24, it was reported by Rodrigues that several persons had been arrested in relation to a housing fraud probe at the Ministry of Housing. She also strongly defended one of her employees who had been implicated on social media.

The minister in a statement on her Facebook page had spoken out, not only about the avalanche of allegations leveled against employees of the Ministry of Housing in relation to corrupt transactions, but also about a senior ministry official who was implicated without evidence in social media posts in receiving bribes in exchange for land.

She had noted in her statement that the resolve of the Ministry to discharge its mandate of serving the needs of the Guyanese public remains unshaken.
