On the evening of 29 November 2023, the presentation of the Guyana Legal Aid Clinic’s (GLAC) first Ashton Chase Prize for Labour Law took place as part of the University of Guyana’s Faculty of Social Sciences’ Award and Prize-giving Ceremony.

A release from the GLAC said that the first winner of the prize is Reanna McGarrell, who is currently attending the Hugh Wooding Law School. Her choice of books included The Complete Advocate, The Modern Law of Evidence and The Laws of Human Nature.

The presentation was made by Professor Kenneth Benjamin, Head of the Department of Law at the Education Lecture Theatre, Turkeyen Campus.

The prize – in the form of books to the cost of US$500 – was established in September 2023 in memory of the late Ashton Chase OE, SC, a founder member and former director and chairperson of the clinic, who was not only a staunch advocate for equal access to justice but regarded as Guyana’s foremost authority on labour law.

The release said that the prize will be awarded annually for the best performance in employment law by a third year law student at the University of Guyana.
