Noise nuisance is elder abuse too

Dear Editor,

It is not fair, Editor, it is not fair from bombs and squibs. The terror continued last night, we were brutalized by the usual street party activity in the wee hours of the mornings to broad daylight from this untouchable from Lisa’s Breezy Restaurant and Bar on Sheriff Street and nothing real serious is being done to stop it by those in authority, two years nine months is way too long to get justice and it is getting worse. It clearly states on the Senior Citizen’s Pension Voucher Book, ‘Elderly Abuse is often invisible’. If you know an elderly person being abused or neglected call 914. Editor, I must admit that in my desperation, seeking help to stop the never-ending bareface, and deliberate acts and attacks of noise abuse on the residents of Sheriff Street by making reports to those in charge the advice to call completely slipped mind, it is only a few days ago when I collected my new pension book, I realized that this is the one option I never sought, calling I mean, but has reached out to the said Ministry by way of letters.

Firstly, I would like to ask this Minister what is her definition of abuse? Does noise abuse fall in that category for her? Is it her understanding that taking away an elderly person’s money? Or ill-treat that person by starving him/her only falls under abuse? Is this the reason why the cries of elderly people on Sheriff Street continue to fall on the deaf ears of the Minister and others in authority? Doesn’t the Minister recognize noise nuisance as abuse on the elderly? And school children too? Surely, the Minister by now is in receipt of the knowledge of many terrifying acts and attacks of noise abuse on both of these vulnerable people on Sheriff Street by more than one individuals every night for countless hours that can only be described as bullies and thugs. I am so fed up of having to repeat myself, by having to highlight this issue at every given opportunity, but I have to be the voice for not only myself, but for others who are either too young, or too scared to stand up to this reckless kind of bullying, our peace and comfort depends on it.

Our health and sanity are deteriorating rapidly. For when you give power like this to an idiot he/she uses it to its full capacity, there is no discretion or consideration for helpless victims. These people are being empowered to do what they do because the law is not being enforced by those in authority. The Christmas holidays are fast approaching. What measure/s will be put in place to protect us from the heavy punishing booming, vibrating and cruel bass that is pitching into our homes for more than eight hours every night from Butcher Chill Bar, Restaurant and Lounge. The harassment from there begins from early in the afternoons on most occasions, this establishment is in breach for not enclosing and sound proofing the business. And the silence from the EPA is deafening. This untouchable by the name of Lisa who operates a socall caravan called Lisa’s Breezy Restaurant and Bar located at the corner of Fourth and Sheriff Streets at Lens Store which I am sure should a proper investigation be carried out it findings will reveal that it is nothing but an illegal, wayside open air rum shop because bars are restricted to an enclosed building and not permitted to operate on a blind spot corner that can cause accidents as it has happened before the road was widened.

Most recently, Butcher Chill Bar, Restaurant and Grill, whose cruel heavy pounding bass, booming and vibrating sounds pitching into our residences for over eight hours Sunday to Sunday must be addressed swiftly. Butcher is not enclosed either, so this shouldn’t be no hard task for those in authority to address, it is a complete no, Butcher must get his house in order and stop operating as if it is a disco he is running to the detriment of his neighbours. The nerve-wracking revving of motor cycle/cycles as it/they race short distances to and fro, for several hours during the night or wee hours of the mornings and what is clearly a deliberate act to inflict misery on the residents residing here. The cameras installed by OMG should provide the evidence. The loud music blasting for three weeks straight under the guise of promotion from the management of Cross Cutters Supermarket but always ends up in a drinking spree for hours without a care that they are disturbing and hurting their neighbours who have health issues. We were spared last weekend. Which Supermarket operates this way?

These people are licensed to operate a supermarket but are attempting to run a beer garden or liquor bar. The hours these events go are way too long. What I would like to know who is responsible for the permission given? If any was? All these people are operating just a stone throw away from each other, there is no peace for the residents here. There are other abusers here too both on Sheriff and Seaforth Streets Campbellville. We are also calling on the Opposition, Women’s Groups to give a voice or any lawyer who has compassion and are willing to extend a helping hand to protect us from this nightmare. PLEASE HELP US. Our sanity is stretched to the limit. The act of noise abuse, especially loud music, has always been a worrisome issue in Guyana over the years, but the new low this dangerous, damaging practice has been allowed to descend is both inexcusable and unacceptable and the way those in authority are addressing or I should say not addressing it. This is a violation on the rights of others to enjoy peace and comfort in their homes. It must be stopped swiftly, we now have a huge influx of people in our country some are here to settle, if laws are not enforced and adhere to we are asking for trouble.

There is a saying ‘Wuh Monkey see, Monkey do,’ these people have a loud speaking culture, don’t encourage them to engage in the loud music culture too. Minister, not only will I be calling 914 today but through this Letter to the Editor, you will be informed again of what is happening to not only the Elderly/children not only on Sheriff Street but throughout this country.

Sincerely,

Pearl Lewis
