I commend you for the comprehensive details in your editorial, “St Vincent meeting.” However, I feel compelled to express that the piece is lengthy for an editorial and might have been more fitting as a report. Regrettably, amidst the detailed narrative, the editorial overlooked the brilliant performance of President Irfaan Ali during the extensive discussions at Argyle, particularly in his engagement with President Maduro.
The resounding sigh of relief from the Guyanese people and the broader region is noteworthy, underscoring the commitment to temporarily maintaining the area as a zone of peace. It is crucial to point out that Mr. Norton’s decision to abstain from the government meeting at Argyle appears to be a colossal blunder. Such choices could significantly impact the PNC, especially with the 2025 general election on the horizon. One cannot ignore that Guyana emerges as the clear winner in this meeting. With the backing of CARICOM and CELAC, President Maduro finds himself in a corner with limited room for maneuvering.
This reality will undoubtedly come to the forefront when they convene in Brazil in three months. President Ali deserves commendation for his stalwart performance, highlighting astuteness and leadership. I hope that future editorials give due recognition to such pivotal accomplishments by the government head and ensure a more balanced view of the President’s performance.
