Bonasika Creek farmer dies after stabbing ex-wife, ingesting poison

A 34-year-old farmer of Upper Bonasika Creek, Essequibo River, and also of Hyde Park, Parika, East Bank Essequibo, died at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) last Thursday after stabbing his ex-wife and then ingesting a poisonous substance.

Dead is Navindra Sam.

According to the police, the stabbing occurred on Boxing Day at about 7 am at the home of his ex-wife, a 34-year-old housewife of Hyde Park, East Bank Essequibo.

Enquiries revealed that Sam and the woman had separated about eight months ago but were still on speaking terms.

The ex-wife had been living with another partner for the past five months at her home. However about two weeks earlier, Sam moved into a rental apartment in the lower flat of his ex-wife’s home and was a frequent visitor to her home

On Christmas Day, the ex-wife reportedly announced to her new partner that she would be reconciling with her ex-husband. He agreed and told her he would leave the home the following morning and go back to his father’s home. That night, the woman and her ex-husband slept in the bedroom on the upper flat while her  partner slept in the hammock in the living room.

The following morning, the woman and her ex-husband were heard arguing very loudly in the bedroom, causing her partner to open the door to investigate. It was then he observed the woman bleeding profusely and that Sam was armed with a knife.

The woman’s son and partner attempted to rescue her but were unsuccessful as Sam threatened them with the knife. Eventually, the landlord came to assist and Sam grabbed a bottle containing poison and ran towards the sea wall.

The woman was then rushed to the Leonora Hospital and was immediately transferred to the WDRH by ambulance. She was admitted in a serious condition with stab wounds to her neck, abdomen, right hand, chest and breast.

And at about 11 am the same day, Sam was taken to Leonora Hospital by an unknown person where he was treated for pesticide poisoning and transferred to the WDRH where he was admitted under police guard. He  died the next day.
