GNNL employee arrested after sexual assault complaints lodged by co-worker

A male employee of the Guyana National Newspapers Limited (GNNL), publishers of the Guyana Chronicle, has been arrested by the police following sexual assault allegations by a co-worker.

In a statement yesterday, GNNL expressed profound concern regarding the recent reports of sexual assault from a female staff member against a male employee of the company.

GNNL said it considers such reports with utmost seriousness and remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a safe and respectful working environment for all employees.

The alleged incidents, which are reported to have taken place on December 22, 2023, and on December 27, 2023, were brought to the attention of the company’s management on Friday, December 29, 2023, afternoon – after a police report was made at the Alberttown Police Station. The lodging of a formal complaint led to the arrest of the male employee, the company said.

On becoming aware, GNNL said it promptly initiated an internal inquiry.  Furthermore, the company says it has fully cooperated with the Guyana Police Force in their investigation. The male employee was immediately sent on administrative leave pending the outcome of the police investigation.

GNNL says it places the highest priority on the safety and well-being of its employees, and it is dedicated to conducting a comprehensive and equitable investigation into the issue.

The company said it remains dedicated to nurturing a workplace culture that prioritizes respect, equality, and safety for all employees.
