During the past months several prominent Guyanese have passed. The most recent was the former Chief Immigration Officer Pitamber Ramphal who died on Friday in Queens, New York. He was 87 and just two weeks from his 88th birthday.
Ramphal served Guyana as Chief Immigration Officer for two decades. He signed hundreds of passports and was very helpful to scores in expediting their passport applications during the difficult period when there was a shortage of passport books and even application forms during the 1980s and 1990. He was a likeable government official. He migrated to the United States after his resignation and first lived in Florida and after the death of his wife Olive he moved to Queens, New York to live with his daughter Rowena.
He was a close friend.
His son Brian who lives in California is a well-known businessman/entrepreneur and is a top contributor to organizations in Guyana especially to the Guyana Relief Council and Berbice Cricket Board.
Friends in London, Toronto and several parts of Guyana and the United States have been sending their condolences to the bereaved relatives.
May his soul rest in eternal peace
